=-=Japan Culture III=-=

Kon nichi Wa! こんにちは!

Hi it's been along time for posting..and most importantly is Japan culture information..

Now..is autumn(end of season) let's talk about my unfinished japan kimono.

[Part 1] http://very-japan.blogspot.com/2008/09/japan-culture-i.html

I left out the history of Kimono.. Let's Start! 始まります!

In fact, kimono-着物 has another name, gofuku. [呉服,literally clothes of Wu () ], the earliest kimono were actually heavily influenced by traditional Han Chinese Clothing, today known as Hanfu (汉服)[kanfuku, in japanese]. Gofuku is orginate from The Three Kingdoms period 三国时代.

We can hear people named it as 和服 [わふく,wafuku] too. In japanese basically means clothing, however as times goes by 和服 simply means traditional costume. This term originate from Meiji period "meiji jidai-明治時代" denotes the period in japanese history during the 45-year reign of the Meiji Emperor.(from 23 Oct 1868 - 30 Jul 1912) 'there are information stated differently, from 1 Jan 1868 - 30 Jul 1912' Anyway is around that period.
Meiji means Enlightened Rule.

①汉·桓宽《盐铁论·相刺》:“天设三光以照记,天子立公卿以明治。”
②《魏书·世宗纪》:“任贤明治,自昔通规;宣风赞务,实惟多士。”

In the past gofuku and wafuku is 2 different concept. As the noble wore wafuku, style and pattern is quite different with gofuku which originate from the Tang Dynasty [唐朝].

Kimono made from high-quality silk is 呉服 'Gofuku'.

Kimono made from cotton is named 太物 'futomono'

Kimono wore by noble were mostly from Tang Dynasty is named 唐服 'toufuku'

'toufuku' i made the translation myself not very sure correct or not sorry..(^0^)

Now, gofuku and toufuku concept had eventually overlapped together. There are many shop had their shop signboard written gofuku ya '呉服屋' "屋" means shop. As we can see these two terms are synonym.

In present Japan, people who called it gofuku-呉服 are majority.

As we can see wafuku had different terms in different culture.

和服呉服,着物 are the 3 main terms.

Basically these 3 terms 'contained' the same meaning.

But, in fact they have different origins, definition and explaination.
